Holidaymakers should have access to "clear transparent advice" when it comes to all the different policies available to them including
cheap travel insurance, says an expert organisation.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) said that backpackers and other holidaymakers should all buy travel insurance before heading out on a trip, but should be given good information to help them make an informed choice.
It added that
online travel insurance should be thought of as a necessity and that most policies are very cheap considering the services they offer in the case of accidents or injury.
Malcolm Tarling, spokesman for the ABI, said: "It's a necessity not a luxury. Even for short trips, the number one fear is getting ill or injured overseas and travel insurance provides that protection which is extremely cheap for the cover it provides."
A recent EU ruling prohibited airlines from adding extra costs like
online travel insurance at the time that people book a flight, but Which? Holiday magazine has found the ruling is being ignored.
