Backpackers looking to avoid the higher costs of the eurozone by aiming for destinations further afield always have the option of buying
gap year travel insurance first.
The Co-operative Travel has revealed that the number of passengers heading to Europe has fallen over the past year, with Air-France KLM showing a drop of almost eight per cent between May 2008 and the same time this year.
Trevor Davis, director of retail distribution at the company, said that 'flooded' capacity on some airlines is one reason, while long-haul destinations are offering competitive prices.
Mr Davis said: "Non-eurozones such as Turkey, Bulgaria and Egypt have rocketed in popularity due to the relative 'cheapness' compared to euro destinations."
He added that the cost of flying has also risen as a result of higher charges imposed on airlines in relation to the cost of fuel and other factors.
In April, Paris was the most popular destination for Britons after London, according to figures from trivago, while many backpackers may have bought one-way travel insurance.
