Gap year travel insurance could be an option for people looking to save money during the downturn by booking a trip within the UK.
Around 20 per cent of Britons who went overseas last year are planning to stay in the UK in 2009, according to tourism agency VisitBritain.
Elliot Frisby, a spokesman for the organisation, said that more Britons could be encouraged to explore the UK in the future once they see what the country has to offer in terms of exciting travel destinations.
Mr Frisby said: "We do not have a prediction beyond 2009 but hope that, once inspired to explore their own country, Britons will see that our destinations can easily rival any overseas for quality and value of experience."
