A British backpacker has been killed after falling into a river torrent from a popular hiking area in the Philippines, it has been reported.
The death of Richard Kidd, 56, comes as a warning to other backpackers looking for adventure.
However, in a reminder that any situation can be potentially dangerous, it is important to note that Mr Kidd was hiking on the 553-metre Mount Samat, which is a popular day hike mountain.
After being swept away by a river torrent, Mr Kidd drowned near Donsolan Falls.
Often, backpackers eager to hit the road will overlook their own insurance claims, and so it is important not only to pick up some travel insurance but to ensure that the policy covers you for what may be deemed as extreme sports.
Taking a seemingly low key day hike can often be misinterpreted by insurance companies not used to dealing with backpackers, and so shopping around for comprehensive cover is essential.
Mount Samat is an important historical destination as well as one popular with hikers. It was instrumental in the Philippines' Battle of Bataan fight against Japanese invaders, and is home to a large war memorial in honour of Philippino and American soldiers.
