More regional visitor centres in Australia could help attract a greater number of backpackers during the global downturn, many of whom will have bought
online travel insurance.
ABC News reports that a professor Philip Pearce, from James Cook University in Townsville, Queensland, has called for more regional visitor centres in a bid to increase tourism.
The professor is scheduled to hold a workshop today (April 6th) to offer research into local tourism facts and figures and to explore ways to expand the sector.
Professor Pearce told the paper: "About 25 per cent of the self-drive people apparently do pick up their information from a local visitor centre, so we're trying to say if we get the visitor centre story right we might be able to hold and capture more people in that area."
Queensland is a popular travel destination for backpackers from across the world, many of whom come with one-way travel insurance, while Cairns is particularly well known for its party atmosphere and easy access to the Great Barrier Reef.
