Backpackers travelling to India disappointed by rising hotel rates may have to look elsewhere to save money - such as
online travel insurance.
According to tour operator Partnership Travel, hoteliers in the subcontinent need to reduce their rates during the recession to remain competitive.
Travel guide Lonely Planet recently touted India as one of its top ten destinations for good value holidays, although it admitted this was no longer the case for mid-range budgets.
Tim Durham, a spokesperson for the operator, said hoteliers have been accustomed to raising their prices by 25 per cent year on year.
He noted that Indian business owners did the same this year and found demand decreased, particularly following the terrorist attacks in Mumbai.
Mr Durham added that those looking for luxury accommodation would still find good deals made even more enjoyable by the fact "they are overlooking the Taj Mahal or sitting in the Himalayas".
