Buying
online travel insurance and remaining flexible about dates could help holidaymakers secure a low-cost break.
According to travel operator On the Beach, keeping an open mind about when to take a break will help to cut costs.
Alistair Daly, the firm's marketing director, said travelling outside of peak season can "vastly" reduce the price of a holiday.
Other ways to cut down on spending include booking an all-inclusive break and travelling to a non-local airport, he added.
Mr Daly noted that value for money is an increasingly important factor for Britons, prompting many hoteliers to lower their rates.
Resorts in Egypt, the Canary Islands and Tenerife are all offering tempting deals on winter sun holidays, suggested the travel expert.
He added: "For 2010, we expect Spain to hit the top spot yet again as hoteliers and airlines compete to attract British holidaymakers."
