The Far East has been touted as a new city break destination for budgeting Britons,
gap year travel insurance customers may be interested to hear.
Online travel firm Expedia reports that holidaymakers are increasingly opting for long weekends in cities such as Hong Kong, Tokyo and Bangkok to take advantage of the low cost of living.
Jonathan Cudworth, director of product management at the firm, said the Thai capital had proved particularly popular as although flights are expensive, it is easy and cheap to eat out and enjoy other little luxuries.
He advised travellers keep their costs down on city breaks by making the most of free attractions and museums.
City passes offering discounted entrance prices are also worth looking into as a "worthwhile investment", added Mr Cudworth.
According to the latest Hotels.com Hotel Price Index, the price of Bangkok accommodation fell year on year by 16 per cent, making the average room rate $100 (£61.20).
