Australia shark attack reveals need for worldwide travel insurance

A shark attack off the coast of New South Wales in Australia has shown the need for online travel insurance.

A 31-year-old surfer has left hospital on crutches after spending a week being treated for injuries sustained during a shark attack. Experts believe that it was a great white shark that attacked Jonathon Beard while he surfed at Fingal Head. The surfer was bitten on his thigh and estimated that he was held in the shark's jaws for five seconds before being let go.

Mr Beard said: "I sort of touched it, felt something hard and tried to brush it away and then it was over, it was gone and I was paddling back."

The surfer bled heavily as he paddled back to shore but the shark did not return. He was airlifted to the Gold Coast Hospital.

Despite their fearsome reputation, sharks rarely attack humans and experts believe that when they do it is frequently a case of mistaken identity.

Backpackers should buy backpacker travel insurance when they go to Australia in case they find themselves the victim of an accident and need medical treatment.
