Backpackers are advised to buy
cheap travel insurance to cover themselves in the event that they fall victim to crime overseas.
According to a report from the New Zealand Herald, a teenager in the town of Blenheim led police on a frantic chase having stolen from his housemates. Discovered trying to book himself into a nearby backpacker hostel, the teen broke free from police and swam across the Taylor River. On reaching the other side he sprinted an extra 300 metres before being re-arrested.
The incident highlights the potential risks faced by backpackers staying in hostels with a communal set up, especially for those choosing to save money by opting for shared rooms. Many hostels offer secure lockers or safes where travellers can leave their most valuable possessions, which is a far better idea than leaving items in a shared dorm and hoping everyone else is trustworthy.
Travellers should choose
cheap travel insurance to cover loss or damage to valuable items, as personal possessions can otherwise be difficult to replace.
