Backpackers opting to explore Europe by train rather than by plane have the option of buying one-way travel insurance.
According to Rail Europe, a company that deals with rail links between the UK and mainland Europe, an increasing number of travellers are choosing to journey by train in response to the range of additional costs associated with budget airlines.
The company said that environmental awareness is also a factor, as the airline industry is facing mounting criticism over the scale of its carbon emissions.
Amanda Monroe, spokeswoman for Rail Europe, said: "People who are concerned about the environment and are really looking for alternatives, they are going to think about taking the train."
She added that with some budget airlines considering implementing additional costs such as charging passengers to use the toilet during a flight, many travellers are feeling discouraged.
Backpackers have the option of seeking
online travel insurance for trips to Europe.
A recent report from responsibletravel.com revealed that it can take an average of nearly 12 minutes to book a train ticket online, whereas booking a flight can take an average of just under seven minutes.
