According to the Canadian Press, backpackers willing to get their hands dirty on placements with travel organisation World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (Wwoof) have more than doubled.
In 2004 there were 6,400 on European trips compared to around 15,700 today.
Backpackers can get a free place to stay and fresh food to eat in return for a few hours work doing tasks like milking cows or helping with the harvest.
One philosophy student from the US told the news agency: "I didn't have enough money to stay on any other way.
"It gets expensive, having to eat and sleep under roofs," he added.
Joining Wwoof's member organisation in Australia costs from AUD $60 (£30).
The organisation's website says it can connect backpackers with over 1,200 organic farms around the country.
