Backpackers could choose to buy
online travel insurance, on the advice of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).
More young people are choosing to travel overseas to countries such as Bolivia rather than attempt to find a job in the current economic climate, but the FCO said there has been a corresponding increase in the number of people having difficulties.
In addition, FCO figures show that over 40 per cent of Britons are not buying
cheap travel insurance or any other kind of policy before heading overseas.
Nigel Baker, HM ambassador to Bolivia, said: "For many it's the first overseas trip they take without their parents and they are often actively looking for an exotic adventure that can lead to problems for a small minority."
Mr Baker added that backpackers can benefit from seeking relevant travel advice before they leave home, while they can also ensure they budget their money sensibly.
The World Travel and Tourism Council recently revealed far-flung holiday destinations are still being booked, despite the pressure of the recession.
Going, going, gone. Downunder for
cheap travel insurance.
