With the recession still driving up unemployment figures, many young people are thinking about heading overseas before they start pursuing a career, but planning the finances first could be a good move.
According to Andrew Hagger of moneynet.co.uk, Leeds Building Society and Egg have both recently launched new savings account deals with easy internet access that could be a big benefit to backpackers.
Mr Hagger told the Scotsman: "Savers need to make a note in their diary to check the rate on offer in 12 months as they'll almost certainly need to switch again if they want to maintain a decent rate of return on their cash."
Buying special travel passes can help save money while travelling outside the UK and many student backpackers take a credit card as well as buying one-way travel insurance, to help them out in emergencies.
While saving up could be a good idea, finding temporary work such as a week fruit-picking en route is also a common plan.
