People planning a trip overseas could find a one-way travel insurance policy acts as a healthy back-up to a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
The Irish Independent reports that although an EHIC will cover travellers for many minor accidents, more comprehensive travel insurance offers much wider protection.
In addition, backpackers planning to ski or snowboard, or take part in any number of other more extreme activities, could make sure they have specific cover for these sports, especially as many ski slopes will not take the EHIC.
Naomi Richardson, editor of price comparison website uchoose.ie, told the paper: "What they (travellers) may not realise is a minor accident isn't always the only problem you may encounter on your travels. It won't cover lost or damaged luggage, passports, air ambulances or airline strikes."
