Backpackers planning a trip to Iceland should buy
cheap travel insurance in preparation for their trip overseas.
Iceland has grown in popularity as a travel destination recently owing in part to its tumultuous economy reducing the value of its currency and resulting in low prices for visitors. Tourist numbers have risen steadily over the past eight years, with nearly 190,000 more people heading to the country last year than in 2000. Overnight stays have also soared by over 50 per cent during the same time period.
Maria Reynisdottir, assistant project manager for Visit Reykjavik, said: "Tours, meals at restaurants and other tourist products and services are at least 50 per cent cheaper now for foreign tourists, than they were at the beginning of the year."
Airlines are also offering competitive fares to the country in a bid to boost tourism and instigate recovery from the economic turbulence that has lead to Iceland dominating headlines in recent weeks.
