Backpackers planning a trip to Allegheny Forest in Pennsylvania might first buy
backpacker travel insurance.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that a local university professor is leading a campaign to have a selection of spots in the forest declared wilderness areas and protected.
Dr Stephen Robar, who teaches political science at the University of Pittsburgh, is being supported by more than 50 other academics and scientists who argue that backpackers would be among those who would enjoy additional wilderness zones.
Prof Robar told the paper: "I'm in full support of the various, multiple uses of the forest, but sportsmen, recreationalists and backpackers could all benefit from more wilderness."
The scientists have formed an organisation called the Friends of Allegheny Wilderness and are keen to expand on the almost 9,000 acres of forest which are officially wilderness.
Allegheny Forest spans nearly 515,000 acres and in the past has been a significant supplier of crude oil for Pennsylvania.
Backpackers could buy one-way travel insurance if they plan to head out there.
