Backpackers should ensure they have good insurance cover before being open to new situations and looking to make friends overseas.
According to the Times there are lots of ways to meet new people while in a faraway land, and even the most introverted character need not worry too much about feeling socially awkward. Staying in hostels is the first way to meet travellers who have set out to have similar experiences. Hostels are based around communal environments, whether backpackers are eating together, playing together or sharing a dormitory.
Talking to everyone a traveller meets, and remembering their names, is recommended as a good way to forge new friendships, and a simple pack of cards can often transcend language barriers. Meeting new people is a good excuse for a night out, at which point everyone is in a social mood.
Cooking a meal for friends is also a good plan. Everyone needs to eat and hostel cooking facilities are free to use and, crucially, communal, offering a good way to mix with like-minded travellers.
