The recent baggage fiasco at Heathrow has underlined the importance of purchasing
cheap travel insurance prior to departure.
Events at Terminal Five were marred by scenes of mayhem as numerous passengers suffered delays and lost luggage that could have potentially left them out of pocket as well as ruining their holiday.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has advised travellers to invest in travel insurance and stated that the policies are there to protect against unforeseen circumstances such as those seen at Heathrow.
"The general principle of travel insurance and indeed, most other types of insurance excepting life insurance, is that you take out a travel policy on the basis that something is unforeseen," said ABI spokesman Malcolm Tarling.
"Obviously life insurance is different because you are going to die at some stage so you can insure against that risk. But travel insurance is designed primarily to protect you from the unforeseen or unexpected risk."
Cheap travel insurance can cover travellers against lost or stolen bags or possessions as well as injury or illness when travelling abroad.
