Cheap travel insurance advised for trips to Zimbabwe

Travellers keen to experience Zimbabwe are advised to first buy backpacker travel insurance.

Travelbite.co.uk reports that Zimbabwe is open to the tourism sector once again after a year of political turmoil that resulted from the 2008 general election. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advised Britons to stay away, but guidelines have been revised since events in the country seem to have calmed down a little. Tourist facilities have been readied once again and although Robert Mugabe remains in power, the country is open for business and tour operators will return in March.

Chris Wrede, a director of tour operator Oasis Overland, visited the country a few weeks ago and told the website: "The welcome from local people was warmer than ever and I was surprised at the openness and honesty in which they discuss their country's economic and political problems."

Stops in the troubled African nation can form an intriguing addition to a tour of neighbouring countries such as Malawi, Tanzania and Botswana, but people should ensure they have worldwide travel insurance.
