People hoping to enjoy parties and festivals in Australia's Byron Bay could benefit from buying
worldwide travel insurance beforehand.
While Byron Bay is renowned as a place which welcomes backpackers - many of whom come equipped with
online travel insurance - the Northern Star reports that local authorities are keen to alter the region's image.
Byron Shire council is looking to tone down the party image by using a tourism management plan to impose limits which include reducing the number of people who can attend events and allowing just two major festivals each year.
The council told the paper: "The recent approval granted to the Splendour in the Grass festival and the proposed new Bluesfest site, have extended party town concerns further through the shire."
Peter Noble, director of Bluesfest, said the events will expand on the region's cultural activities and he criticised the council for failing to consult with anyone from the arts community.
Cairns, in Queensland, is having similar debates as backpackers are supporting proposals to extend opening times for bars and clubs in the town.
