Worldwide travel insurance is an option for backpackers planning a trip to lower-cost accommodation in the Maldives.
According to ttglive.com, the Maldives are to target a lower-end market by introducing reduced taxation for development companies who build cheaper hotels and hostels.
The region is historically regarded as a higher-end travel destination as much of the recent development has been in luxury resorts, which tends to be too expensive for backpackers and middle-income holidaymakers.
Mohamed Nasheed, the newly-elected president of the Maldives, told the website: "The high-end has squeezed the middle market out of the Maldives."
He added that he is keen to boost the number of British tourists visiting the region each year by 50 per cent to 300,000. Many Brits may have bought one-way travel insurance before they leave home.
Investment will also be channelled into local infrastructure to improve accessibility for tourists.
In related news, the Fiji Times recently reported that the country's Uprising Resort was completely full over the Easter weekend, despite the global downturn.
