According to popular travel guide Lonely Planet, the credit crunch has had little impact on the number of people travelling the world.
While many people have opted to take simpler holidays in destinations closer to home as a result of financial turmoil, the number of people living with basic requirements on globe-trotting trips has not changed much. Young people taking gap years and older people taking career breaks are enjoying travelling on the cheap and seeing the world.
David Else, author at Lonely Planet, said: "The actual number of people (young and old) travelling the world or taking a simpler/shorter holiday has not been impacted much by the credit crunch."
According to the Office for National Statistics (Ons), France, Spain and Italy are the most popular destinations for family holidays, while backpackers tend to opt for south-east Asia and Australia.
