The Galapagos Islands, renowned across the world for their unique wildlife, have seen their popularity soar in recent years, reports the Los Angeles Times.
The population of the islands has risen by 50 per cent over the last ten years with a permanent community of 30,000 people now enjoying higher wages than on mainland Ecuador. The tourism industry has increased by around 13 per cent every year over the past decade, with tourists attracted by the promise of giant tortoises, marine iguanas and flamingos.
The authorities in charge of Galapagos National Park are looking to introduce more sustainable forms of tourism to the island in a bid to improve protection of the various species that make the islands their home.
Although sharply rising tourist figures have been highlighted as an issue, implementing new conservation methods should help to preserve the area's natural beauty.
