Media coverage of applications for a caretaker position on Hamilton Island off the north-east coast of Australia could inspire backpackers with
cheap travel insurance.
The position itself is being marketed as "the best job in the world" and it's not hard to see why. The post involves simply living in a three-bedroom villa on the island in Australia's Whitsunday Islands. There is no rent and the six-month position pays £70,000, with a mere 12 hours of work each month involving feeding fish, collecting mail and keeping various video records and diaries to help promote the region.
Anthony Hayes, chief executive officer of Tourism Queensland, told the Associated Press: "What we're really trying to do is drum up as much interest and as much passion for the place as we can."
That's worked pretty well so far, with a million hits and 2,000 applications managing to crash the website in just three days. The sudden international interest could also inspire backpackers with
online travel insurance to head to Australia.
