The editor of Total Gambler magazine has observed that his readers like to play safe by going on long haul trips to Las Vegas rather than try out fast-emerging new destinations such as Macau.
Chris Marais explained that his readership will go "once or twice" a year Las Vegas as "everything they need is there".
Mr Marais pointed out that there's no language barrier and the cheapness of the dollar has contributed to its enduring appeal.
He said: "It has all the other attractions away from gambling; there are sports to watch there, it has shows, and it has excursions out to the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon.
"Macau is just a gambling centre at present."
For those who don't know, Macau is situated just 37 miles south-west of Hong Kong. Originally an island, a connecting sandbar gradually turned into a narrow 'isthmus', changing Macau into a peninsula.
With its average temperature of 72F - in July the average is 83F - its heat and humidity ensures that there are beads of sweat on all but the coolest roulette players' brows for much of the year.
