Two backpackers became victims of a robbery in New Zealand over the weekend, highlighting the need for
online travel insurance.
According to Stuff.co.nz, NZPA reports that the travellers, from Germany and Austria respectively, had their belongings stolen by a pair of motorists while hitchhiking to Taupo in North Island. The backpackers were driven to an agreed location but then the motorists abruptly drove off when they got out of the vehicle, taking their backpacks with them.
One of the backpackers tried to open one of the rear doors of the black or dark green sedan car as it drove away, but was unsuccessful.
The driver was a Maori of Polynesian man in his mid-20s sporting a tattoo that included the word 'tribal', while his passenger was a younger Caucasian man with crooked teeth.
New Zealand is generally known as a very safe place to visit, but incidents do happen and they highlight the need for
backpacker travel insurance. Hitchhiking is not normally recommended as a good way of getting around while overseas, given the risks involved.
Gap year travel insurance is urged for young people heading to New Zealand.
