Need for cheap travel insurance highlighted after backpacker rescue in Finland

The need for travellers to buy cheap travel insurance was highlighted when a backpacker was saved from a Finnish precipice over the weekend, reports hs.fi.

The English-speaking traveller was found dangling from a rock precipice in Finland's Nuuksio National Park on Sunday afternoon. He had apparently slipped on some moss and taken a fall, but a strap on his backpack had caught on a root, leaving him dangling in the air about seven metres above the ground.

A fall could have resulted in several broken bones, but his calls were heard by passersby and firemen attended the scene. Ropes were lowered to the backpacker and he was hoisted back to safety.

The incident highlights the need for backpackers to get hold of cheap travel insurance before heading off on a journey overseas. A few broken bones can otherwise result in considerable medical fees depending on what country is being visited at the time.

Travellers are also reminded to explore whether they need specific cover for different activities, such as bungee-jumping in New Zealand.
