Backpacker travel insurance could be handy for people who booked a trip to Rio de Janeiro before the recession began to grip the UK.
Laura Rendell-Dunn, at travel firm Journey Latin America, said that as most Britons had booked tickets for Rio before the downturn began, she doubted it would make of a difference for this year's carnival.
She added that hotels in the city concerned about the impact on next year's occupancy rates may start to reduce their prices to provide an extra incentive.
Ms Rendell-Dunn said: "In general, people would have booked six to nine months in advance, so the vast majority would have already booked their holiday to Rio [before the economic downturn started]."
The tourism expert went on to say that areas of South America such as Salvador are particularly popular among Europeans as people can fly there directly from Lisbon.
Cheap travel insurance could be useful for backpackers.
A study from VisitBritain found that less than half of Britons surveyed would reduce spending on holidays to save money during the recession.
