Cheap travel insurance could help backpackers who are inspired to visit certain countries as a result of media campaigns.
According to travel company i-to-i, young backpackers are more likely to opt for involvement with voluntary overseas projects as a result of issues being highlighted on TV programmes or other media outlets.
Bruce Haxton, operations director at i-to-i, said that the number of people expressing an interest in travelling to Africa has risen dramatically owing to high-profile anti-poverty campaigns such as Live Aid.
Mr Haxton added: "Since Live Aid a couple of years ago and all of the awareness-raising celebrities have done in relation to Africa, we've seen a big spike in people wanting to travel to Africa."
He added that young people generally prefer to help out directly by travelling than by simply making a donation to the relevant causes. People heading out on a trip have the option of buying
worldwide travel insurance.
A recent study from i-to-i found that a quarter of Britons felt they should be giving more to charity.
