People heading abroad on winter breaks or to cold destinations could first buy
cheap travel insurance.
According to new figures from insurance firm Saga, the value of belongings taken on holiday by Britons on winter trips is on average almost £240 more than at other times of the year.
Worldwide travel insurance could offer protection in case of theft.
The survey showed that around ten per cent of suitcases used by British travellers on winter breaks reach values of almost £650.
Claims for missing or stolen belongings are often harder because only 11 per cent of travellers tend to hang onto receipts. Without a written record of possessions and their worth, successful claims become less likely.
Travellers are advised to make sure that their backpacks or suitcases are sturdy and that their valuables are safely stored.
Outer pockets are sometimes more vulnerable to opportunistic thieves.
Padlocks and other security devices can be used to keep suitcases safe during transit.
