A winter marathon being held for the first time in the Canadian city of Ottawa could attract people with
online travel insurance.
According to metronews.ca, the Winterman Marathon is being held to raise money for Search and Rescue (Sar) Global One, an organisation which specialises in mounting searches for missing backpackers and hikers.
Around 800 people have signed up for race which takes place on Sunday February 22nd and comprises a five km course which runs between the city's War Museum and Tunney's Pasture.
Lawrence Conway, the marathon's race director, told the paper: "A smaller, close loop is a lot more controllable from our perspective and for spectators as well. If you have a big, long course there would be long gaps of isolation for the runners."
Ottawa plays host to a range of additional sporting events during February, including the Really Cool Prediction Run, the Winterlude Triathlon and the Canadian Ski Marathon. Visitors have the option of buying
worldwide travel insurance.
Canada offers huge areas of wilderness which are a major pull for backpackers seeking an escape from more urban areas.
