Oz car accident could encourage take-up of backpacker travel insurance

A car accident near Shepparton in Victoria, Australia, could encourage more backpackers to seek cheap travel insurance.

Six international backpackers were hit by a car early on Wednesday morning as they headed for work at a nearby orchard. It was revealed that the driver was the owner of the hostel in which they were staying.

One of the backpackers, a woman from Hong Kong, sustained head injuries and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, while another had their leg broken. The others received only minor injuries.

Senior constable Leeanne Clinton told ABC News: "One of the people has been airlifted to hospital in a critical condition and four others have suffered less serious injuries. Police are currently speaking to the driver at the Shepparton police station."

Reports indicated that the driver may have been distracted by sun glare when the accident happened.

Backpackers could choose to buy gap year travel insurance before they set off on a trip.

Many travellers in Australia choose to seek temporary work in places such as orchards so they can earn money for their trip.
