Backpackers defying the recession by planning trips overseas have the option of first buying
cheap travel insurance.
Despite economic hardships around the world, people are still booking holidays and overseas adventures to far-flung locations, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).
More people are expected to travel within the UK, with international tourists attracted by the weak pound and Britons seeking a cheap holiday.
The WTTC's Economic Impact report for this year predicts that the value of the tourism sector to Britain's gross domestic product will increase by 0.1 per cent over the next decade.
Amir Girgis, economist at the WTTC, said: "People want cheaper holidays. People still want to travel and that is the difference between this recession and any other blips we have had in the travel and tourism industry."
He added that holiday deals are more common now in the UK as travel firms try to encourage a growth in domestic tourism. All visitors have the option of buying
backpacker travel insurance.
The Daily Mail reports that London mayor Boris Johnson has launched a new £2 million campaign promoting the city on an international level.
