People choosing to haggle for reduced hostel rates also have the option of buying
worldwide travel insurance.
Hotels.com has advised travellers to avoid well-known tourist areas while overseas and try to pursue cheaper rates from more local accommodation.
Cordy Griffiths, PR manager at the website, said travellers tend to aim for well-known regions, which means they often get charged higher tourist prices. She recommended aiming for places more off the beaten track to pursue cheaper rates.
"People should shop around and avoid the main tourist places on the main squares in cities and right on the beach front," Ms Griffiths said.
She added that travellers can save a lot of money if they haggle prices at the venue itself rather than booking beforehand. Significant expenses could also be saved by buying
cheap travel insurance in advance.
A new study from the website found that British tourists are saving nearly £2 billion a year by haggling prices on holiday, leading to average individual savings of over £30.
