Abta - The Travel Association has urged people to find out more about local laws and customs in response to Foreign Office figures regarding Britons getting into trouble during overseas visits.
Abta stressed that numbers of Britons getting into difficulties are not rising, but an awareness of cultural differences in more conservative countries around the world could help travellers enjoy themselves more easily.
A spokeswoman for Abta said: "If people come prepared and think about the countries which you are going to they are less likely to get into trouble once they're out there."
She added that countries like Greece may have a strong nightlife and bar culture, but they are also conservative societies at their heart.
Foreign Office figures have revealed that one in seven men have had sex in a public place while abroad and 50 per cent of women fail to check local laws before deciding to sunbathe topless, whether they do it by a pool or on the beach.
