A lengthy cycle route being proposed for construction in New Zealand could attract backpackers with
online travel insurance.
Bloomberg reports that New Zealand prime minister John Key has proposed construction of a bike path spanning over 1,850 miles through the country, in a bid to attract keen cyclists during the global downturn.
The route would run from the popular backpacker resort region of Queenstown in South Island through to Marlborough further north, and while the construction itself would generate jobs, accommodation and support services would be needed after construction as well.
Robin Clements, New Zealand economist for UBS AG in Christchurch in the South Island, told the website: "Doing something is important for the psychology of those who still have jobs. Does it increase the odds that we will recover from the recession later this year? Maybe."
If the route is approved by New Zealand's regional councils, many cyclists could buy
worldwide travel insurance and enjoy travelling through the South Island's stunning natural landscapes.
Queenstown offers a range of extreme sports such as bungee jumping and skydiving.
