Tasmania urged to follow New Zealand's green footsteps

Tasmania has been urged to follow in New Zealand's green footsteps in a bid to improve sustainable tourism.

Tasmania, like Australia and New Zealand, is renowned for its stunning scenery, and tourism experts have advised authorities in the country to update sustainability policies in order to expand the industry and attract more environmentally-aware visitors. New Zealand has recently taken steps to improve urban environments and Tasmania will remain competitive by doing the same.

Kim McKay, a tourism expert, told ABC News: "We're seeing in research from Tourism Australia and other organisations that sustainability and environmental performance is becoming a criterion when people are selecting a destination."

Incredible landscapes are a key appeal for Tasmania and it is likely to generate greater international appeal by taking inspiration from New Zealand's approach to sustainability.

Young people are increasingly aware of their impact on the environment and will be encouraged to see eco-friendly advances made in Tasmania.
