A leading budget travel specialist has claimed that travel insurance is the 'wisest purchase' British backpackers can make before they head off on their gap year.
STA Travel conducted a survey which showed that a year out is often the first and biggest investment made by young travellers, costing between £3,000 and £5,000.
With such a big financial commitment already in place, the company emphasised the importance of backpacker travel insurance to ensure that further cost are not incurred should the worst happen.
A spokesman said: "Travel insurance can seem like an unnecessary extra cost, however, it is undoubtedly the wisest purchase you can make before going on your gap year.
"You should ensure the travel insurance you take out covers all the countries you plan to travel to and any activities you plan to participate in. Be prepared for the unexpected."
STA also advises travellers to work out a budget before they leave, while also investigating the costs associated with taking money out of an ATM or using a mobile phone while abroad.
