Price comparison site moneysupermarket.com has advised travellers to seek coverage for airline failure as part of their travel insurance.
Recent news headlines have been dominated by the financial collapse of airlines such as Zoom and XL, and a study from moneysupermarket.com revealed that only four insurers currently offer coverage against these kinds of events. Travellers are advised to look for the relevant cover to avoid being caught out in far-flung destinations such as New Zealand or South Africa.
Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at moneysupermarket.com, said: "As the significance of this type of cover becomes more apparent, the good news for travellers is in the future more insurers will recognise the value of scheduled airline cover".
Swiftcover offers protection from scheduled airline failure for an extra £1 on top of its existing insurance premium, while easyJet and Ryanair offer the same for customers buying it directly alongside flight purchases.
