According to Direct Line Travel Insurance, seeking the right insurance policy before heading overseas is hugely important.
With destinations such as New Zealand, Australia and South Africa increasingly popular amongst young backpackers, it has never been more important to seek travel insurance appropriate to the destination. It is also important to think about what travellers will be doing on their trip, as many forms of extreme sports need specific coverage due to the inherent danger.
Chris Price, head of Direct Line Travel insurance, told world-first.co.uk: "It is very important that travellers take out appropriate insurance to cover them should an incident occur while they're on holiday."
Mr Price urged people to ask for advice from friends and relatives who might have been on a similar trip, while insurance companies themselves should also be able to offer tips.
Adventurous activities like bungee jumping, white-water rafting and skiing are hugely popular, but accidents are commonplace, especially on ski slopes. According to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, ten per cent of British skiers are injured each year.
