The Telegraph has advised travellers to shop around for the best deals on
cheap travel insurance, rather than accepting the first offer they find.
Many airlines now automatically include travel insurance as part of the booking process when customers buy a flight, forcing travellers to actively opt out of it if they want to avoid the extra cost. While travel insurance is a vital addition to any overseas trip, there are frequently better deals to be found by spending a few minutes shopping around rather than opting for airline cover.
A spokesman for the Financial Service Authority (FSA) told the paper: "Pre-ticking the insurance box interferes with the customer's ability to make an informed decision and we do not consider that in most cases it will result in the kind of outcomes for consumers we are looking for."
Travellers are advised that specialist operators often provide
cheap travel insurance which is frequently more comprehensive than what is offered by airlines.
