Travellers heading to Australia and planning to work could first buy
cheap travel insurance.
According to thewest.com.au, work for backpackers and other travellers in Western Australia is becoming less abundant as a result of the global economic downturn, but many country pubs are still hiring and the weather has also delayed the picking season in the region. Visitor numbers to some hostels have not taken a dramatic fall, however, as Australia retains its popularity.
Jay Long, manager at Sundancer Backpackers in Fremantle, told the paper: "Last year at this time we were turning away 20 or 30 people a day and this year it's maybe ten or 15. But we're still full."
The delay in the fruit-picking industries will be good news for travellers planning to work in the region in the next few weeks. Backpackers could buy
online travel insurance and consider taking extra savings in case work is slower coming once they get out there.
Australian government figures have shown a reduction in visitor numbers but many backpackers are unwilling to let economic turmoil get in the way of their travel plans.
