A travel journalist has observed that the UK has become a cool place for people to visit for short weekend breaks.
Russell Amerasekera believes that the major cities in the UK "really do stack up against anything that you will get in any other major cities in the world".
He said: "London, Manchester, and Birmingham all have as much to offer in terms of shopping experience, the night life experience, the restaurant experience and culture as well.
"We have beaten ourselves up a lot in this country but you are talking to someone who has spent a lot of their life travelling abroad and I'm standing up for the UK now."
Recent research conducted by visitbirmingham.com revealed that young people aged 16 to 24 are the group most likely to say nightclubbing is essential to their perfect weekend (ten per cent).
Over one in three (36 per cent) of Britons say they would be happy to travel two to three hours by train to get away on a weekend break, with 25 per cent being happy to travel up to three to four hours.
