Local authorities are keen to build upon the region's backpacker appeal after more than 90,000 budget travellers visited throughout the course of 2008. Many will have purchased one-way travel insurance.
A partnership has been formed between the Northern Territory government and backpacker website gapyear.com, in a bid to encourage more visits and expand on the seven per cent growth the region's backpacker market experienced last year.
Speaking at Melaleuca Backpackers, a hostel about a two-and-a-half hour flight from Sydney, Dr Chris Burns, tourism minister for the Northern Territory government, said: "Backpackers are an important part of our tourism industry - it's estimated they spent $54 million (£25.6 million) in the Territory in 2008 and when backpackers spend money that means jobs for Territorians."
The campaign primarily comprises two new guides designed by the regional government for use on gapyear.com.
Darwin is the state capital of the Northern Territory.
