Backpackers facing higher costs to get a passport have the option of buying
gap year travel insurance before they leave home.
Abta - the Travel Association reports that the increased cost of a British passport, set to rise from £72 to £77.50 from September, could create further problems for people looking to travel on a budget.
The association has encouraged backpackers and other travellers who face an imminent expiry on their passports to get them replaced before the new pricing scheme begins.
Frances Tuke, spokeswoman for Abta - the Travel Association, said: "I think it has some very unfortunate timing where everyone is trying to cut corners when it comes to costs and this makes travel that little bit more expensive."
The Identity and Passport Service has said that a desire to maintain a high level of customer service is behind the price hike, as well as keeping a high standard of security.
Cheap travel insurance could help backpackers save money.
There were ten per cent fewer international flights to and from the UK in April, according to OAG, which is part of UBM Aviation.
