Online travel insurance is recommended in the event that backpackers lose property while travelling in South Africa.
The Herald Online reports that a Canadian traveller was lucky to have his lost moon-bag recovered this week by a kind-hearted resident of Korsten, South Africa. Canadian Ken Shane has been cycling around the world for the past 20 years but left the bag containing money, credit cards and his passport in the town of Colchester when he set off for Kings Beach. Luckily, however, Korsten resident Shaun Pietersen had found the bag and used a couple of hostel business cards to trace the owner.
Mr Shane told the website: "Never did it occur to me that someone would go the extra mile to return it. This is proof that there are still people out there who have good hearts."
Mr Pietersen ended up driving all the way to Colchester and eventually tracked down the Canadian cyclist in the town's Kwik Spar.
The incident highlights the need for people to buy
backpacker travel insurance before they leave home, as the kindness of strangers in returning lost property should not be relied upon.
