Worldwide travel insurance advised for 'couchsurfers' in South Africa

Football fans hoping to sleep on someone's sofa during next year's World Cup in South Africa are advised to buy cheap travel insurance first.

AFP reports that the World Cup comes to South Africa in 2010 and football fans across the world are planning how to stay in the country as cheaply as possible while also getting to watch their sporting heroes on the pitch.

Many backpackers are considering so-called 'couchsurfing', which involves sleeping for free on a stranger's couch for a few nights through online network the Couchsurfing Project, which is dedicated to helping out budget travellers.

Fans like 29-year-old Brazilian Anselmo Zacarias Portes, look to experience the local culture as well as get a few nights free accommodation. Mr Portes told the news agency: "I expect, if I'm lucky enough, that South African couchsurfers will help me have this kind of experience there too."

Mr Portes has already spent nights on a London sofa and has hosted five people at different times on his own couch in Sao Paulo.

Travellers should look for backpacker travel insurance first.

In an interview with the Saudi Gazette, South Africa's envoy John Davies said that preparations for next year's tournament were ahead of schedule.
