An attempted backpacker theft in Nelson, New Zealand, has shown the need for
online travel insurance.
The Nelson Mail reports that a 23-year-old Chilean backpacker narrowly avoided serious physical injury shortly after arriving in New Zealand when he was caught in a car door by two men trying to steal his belongings. The backpacker had accepted a ride from two Maori men to a Nelson hostel, but as he got out of the car and reached for his backpack from the boot, the car drove away and dragged him along the road for 100 metres.
Acting sergeant Terry Holland, of Nelson police, said that the traveller was wearing another backpack at the time, which saved him from more serious injury and meant he sustained only cuts, bruises and torn clothes.
Witnesses nearby were able to provide a description of the two men and a vehicle number plate.
The incident is a reminder to all backpackers to buy
cheap travel insurance when journeying abroad.
