According to one travel company, the countries are often chosen by young backpackers as they remind them of home.
Marcus Watts, founder of Gapforce, said: "When they are going to Australia, their only real question is how much they are going to get paid if they get a job there. They don't ask too many questions if they are going to those countries as they are perceived to be similar to the UK with less risk."
He added that although the risks to safety are small, there are several things travellers can do to protect themselves: "Having a briefing or open day where they can speak face-to-face with someone who has come back from the area they are going to, is a great way to find out about the area."
His comments follow news New Zealand's prime minister has announced a review of the adventure travel industry following the deaths of ten young people in the last 18 months.
